Swiftwater First Responder – Module 2
This course is aimed at selected operational personnel who respond to water
incidents and have available to them the correct PPE.
The course introduces water rescue equipment including its safe and effective use and progressively develops the student to be confident in and around water. As well as learning how to read the water, the student will practice wading rescues and self-rescue techniques appropriate to the risk, bank based rescues and shallow water crossings, and unstable surface hazards such as mud and ice.
This course satisfies the criteria of DEFRA Water Safety And Rescue Guidelines for Module 2 – Water First Responder.
Scope of the Course
Candidates of this class are capable of hazard recognition, equipment use, and techniques to coordinate, perform, and supervise a technical rescue.
This course involves basic rope work and management, as well as search, rescue and/or recovery operations.
Aim
To develop individuals to Module 2 of water rescue, for a swift water & flood environments.
After successful completion of the course, candidates will be able to:
- List water safety guidelines for operations in and around water.
- Describe various open water environments and their potential hazards.
- Demonstrate the skills and knowledge to participate at the operations level in performing a rescue in swift moving water either in a natural or flood induced setting.
- Cross channels of moving water using a variety of techniques.
- Assess moving water condition, characteristics and features in terms of hazards to the victim and rescuer.
- Determine method of victim entrapment.
- Have a basic knowledge of ropes and technical equipment.
- Self rescue and swim in a swift water environment.
